How to Remove a Hard Tonneau Cover
There are different types of tonneau covers, each offering its own advantages. Hard tonneau covers are the most solid type of covers providing the highest level of protection. But unlike the soft cover that can be removed easily, the hard one will take more time and effort to take off. You will need someone to assist you to get the job done. As for the tools, you will need just a screwdriver.
To remove a hard tonneau cover, take the following steps:
- First, you need to determine the points that attach your cover to the pickup truck. Open the lid of your truck using your tailgate key. Then you have to open the bed cover and allow it to rest on the bed’s side. It is better to place some soft material between the tonneau cover and your pickup in order not to scratch your truck’s body.
- With the help of a screwdriver, remove the clips attaching tonneau cover shock mounts to the shock brackets on the side of your pickup truck and then remove the shocks.
- Now, you need to remove pins on the hinges. Place two curved arms along the truck bed’s length securing your tonneau to the bed’s side. Then remove a silver pin on one arm and close your bed cover. Crawl under the bed with a flashlight to find the other pin and remove it too. After that, release your tonneau cover from the curved arms on both sides. Place the rear mounting plates near the truck’s cab and turn the silver handles counterclockwise in order to loosen the mount.
- Now, your tonneau cover is completely detached from the body, so you need to take it off the bed. Do it carefully to avoid any kind of damage and ask someone to help you, because your tonneau cover may be too heavy and bulky for you to remove it alone.
